Crash (2005)

A Film Review by Jonathan O. Susvilla (toyski.com)
Rating: 9/10
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon
Screenplay: Paul Haggis
Director: Paul Haggis

Set in the diverse melting pot of the City of Angels, Crash speaks about something no one dares to talk about for a long time. It has a complicated plot shaped by interesting intertwined subplots which define racism in different forms.

Questions like: When did Persians become Arabs?; Why is somebody born of parents from El Salvador and Puerto Rico called a Mexican?; Why should Blacks be feared or should they be in first place?; Why should Blacks act like Blacks and how should a Black act anyway?; are but just some of those confronted bravely. These are questions that never could have come out had there been nothing what we call racial discrimination.

It's a rare cinematic experience that leaves a challenge to its audience to examine their own bigotry and fears. It's an important and courageous attempt to preach America and a very successful and credible one at that. A beautiful and intelligent work of a genius, Crash is a movie no one should miss.
